Transfer of Your J-1 from MIT to Another Institution

This page explains the process for transferring your J-1 program sponsorship from MIT to another institution. Questions regarding eligibility for a J-1 transfer should be addressed to an advisor in the International Scholars Office (ISchO).

Please note that if your J-1 is sponsored by another institution or organization, this process is different; please contact the ISchO for more information.

“Transfer Out” Procedure

A J-1 exchange visitor may transfer their J-1 program sponsorship from MIT to another institution if the purpose of the transfer is to complete the objective for which he or she was admitted to exchange visitor status, and if the exchange visitor remains within the same J-1 category.

Thirty days advance notice to ISchO is requested. If you need to request a transfer out that is less than 30 days away, please contact your advisor in the ISchO for assistance.

Please initiate the transfer out request by completing the e-form “Request to Transfer J-1 Sponsorship from MIT to another Institution” in the J-1 Scholar Services section of the ISchO Portal. The start date at the new institution must be the day after the MIT appointment ends. There should be no gap. Example: If your MIT will end on August 31, your start date at your new institution must be September 1. Please contact your advisor in the ISchO if you have any questions.

Your Human Resources contact in your MIT Department, Lab, Center, or Institute (DLCI) will receive a courtesy email when the transfer out request is approved by the ISchO.

Your new institution will gain access to your J-1 SEVIS record to complete the transfer on the effective date of the transfer. They will then be able to issue new Form(s) DS-2019 for you and any family members in J-2 status.
