7.11.3 Visa Sponsorship

MIT sponsors visas only for certain academic and research positions, as described in detail in the sections that follow. MIT does not sponsor the following individuals for employment-based visas or for exchange visitor visas: students; technical, administrative, library, or support staff members; individuals with inadequate funding, insurance, or credentials; or those whose particular visa history precludes sponsorship.

Submitting Visa Sponsorship Requests

The International Scholars Office (ISchO) handles applications and information regarding visas for foreign academic and sponsored research staff and is MIT's liaison with immigration authorities.

ISchO will not initiate visa documentation for visitors (e.g., visiting scientists, visiting scholars, and visiting engineers) until the underlying sponsored research agreement has been fully executed by Research Administration Services. Departments, labs, and centers must wait until the agreement is formally signed before making a request to ISchO for visa sponsorship for a visitor.
