Reminders for international scholars

Dear International Scholars,

We are writing to remind you of some important government requirements as you maintain your valid immigration status. These are routine requirements, but worth a reminder as the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is increasing its enforcement efforts.

(1) Carry “evidence of registration” at all times

U.S. immigration law (Section 264(e) of the Immigration and Nationality Act) requires every nonimmigrant 18 years of age and over to carry their “evidence of registration” document at all times, which in most cases would be:

*ISchO strongly recommends that you carry a printed copy of your most recent I-94 record with you at all times.

When traveling: Please consult ISchO’s Travel Advisory page for guidance on what to carry when traveling domestically, and for MIT’s most recent advisory on international travel.

(2) Notify USCIS of a change of address within 10 days of your move [INA 265(a) [8 USC 1305(a); 8 CFR 265.1]

Most non-U.S. citizens are required to report a change of address to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) within 10 days of the change. The requirements and procedure vary depending on your visa type; please consult our Change of Address page for details.

(3) An additional note on re-registering children: USCIS has recently published a rule requiring children who turn 14 while in the U.S. to “re-register” with USCIS within 30 days, effective April 11, 2025. We are reviewing the new re-registration rule, and we will provide guidance once we have more clarification.

As always, if you have any questions, please do reach out to your ISchO advisor.

Sincerely,

International Scholars Office (ISchO)
